About the Event

Students who are living in temporary housing may also have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) which requires a range of services to meet their educational needs. To support our students, there needs to be a coordination of programs that implement the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act and special education programs which implement the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). During this session, emphasis will be placed on the role of the liaisons in supporting students with disabilities who are living in temporary housing. Specific strategies will be explored to help liaisons and special education staff to create a coordinated approach to serve students in temporary housing who also have disabilities. Various scenarios and examples involving children with IEPs at all grade levels, and attending out-of-district special education placements (including BOCES) will be explored. We suggest you invite your Special Education/Pupil Personnel Staff as well as CSE Chairs to attend this session as well. At the completion of this webinar participants will be able to:

  • Identify key provisions of the McKinney-Vento Act as it pertains to the rights of children with disabilities under IDEA.
  • Gain knowledge about honoring the IEP for children experiencing temporary housing.
  • Access resources for children with disabilities and developmental delays who are experiencing temporary housing.
